There are creatures lurking in our world. Obscure creatures long relegated to myth and legend. They have been sighted by a lucky-or unlucky-few, some have even been photographed, but their existence remains unproven and unrecognized by the scientific community. These creatures, long thought gone, have somehow survived; creatures from our nightmares haunting the dark places. They swim in our lakes and bays, they soar the night skies, they hunt in the woods. Some are from our past, and some from other worlds, and others have always been with us-watching us, fearing us, hunting us.These are the cryptids, and Systema Paradoxa tells their tales.***Same ol' Syn, all new mischief... Just when Theodore Syn starts thinking about sinking roots, the military comes calling, needing a man with his... unique qualifications to deal with a need-to-know problem that's cropped up in the Chesapeake Bay.Something is out there, frightening fish and fishermen alike. But that's not the real problem. Someone is masquerading as a military official on American soil, and with war on the horizon, steps need to be taken to safeguard the East Coast, before the Axis Powers drive a U-boat--or something more unexpected--right up the mouth of the Bay.… (plus d'informations)

What if all of those mythical monsters that filled your youth were in fact real ... Dragons, Griffins, Unicorns, mermaids etc., you get the idea. Let this book take you away into the 'what if' world. This book is about a few of those mythical creatures. It was a pleasure to read. I thought I would never be able to get into such a book, now I am curious and will certianly read more of his works. A very well written book, even though the part on Chessie could have had a more distinct tone, in particular the details at the end of the book. Those could have made for a touching ending. Overall, however, the writer has a superior narration style. ( )

I loved this book! I love the idea of cryptids being so aware, so available and they make for exciting adventures and stories. This was also a great 1-2 day read that helped me occupy my down time.

I did think the story started off a little slow, but the pace of the story picked up and had really exciting moments. The integration of Chessie into WWII was great and the story is told so well that it's honestly believable that it happened.

Chessie as a main character, her voice, her thoughts was beautiful and poignant for me. ( )

Usually, books in the "Systema Paradoxa" series focus on a specific fearsome critter. Not so "Cessie at Bay", which offers two for the price of one: the eponymous"Chessie", the "Nessie" of Cesapeake Bay, plus a family of snallygasters. The story is even in part told from their pov. They are depicted as not only intelligent and telepathic but also making moral decisions, trying to get along with their human neigbours.

Add to that a plot involving spies and submarines on the eve of WW II, a plot that unfolds concisely and without ado, well-written by an author who can do his stuff and has clearly done his research (except in one instance, mentioning "Saknussemm and Lindenbrock" (sic) as if they were real people), and what you get is a quick, fun read. (I was given a copy of this book for an honest review through Early Reviews)
C’cil, one of several ancient creatures that have been around since before the dinosaurs, is young by her species standard. Usually careful not to be seen, curiosity brings her above water as a helicopter is patrolling the bay at the beginning of WWII.
Theodore Syn, AKA Scarecrow, gets called in by the military after the pilots spot an unusual creature in the Chesapeake Bay. Scarecrow is no stranger to creatures most people don’t know exist. He’s even related to a family of snallygasters in the mountains of Frederick County, Maryland. Add in a chameleon-like human and Italian spies trying to bring the war to our shores, and you have a winner.
John L. French draws on local Maryland legends and sightings of Chessie, the Chesapeake Bay Sea Serpent, to bring this story to life. If you like mystery, intrigue, and good old gumshoe stories with a unique twist, this one is for you. ( )
