In the southern summers of 1972-73 and 1973-74 Dr Lewis made the first single handed voyage to the Antarctic, aboard his sloop "Ice Bird". In the southern summer of 1970-78 he returned to the Antarctic in the yacht Solo with an eight person expedition mounted by the Oceanic Research Foundation.
