"Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life-living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising a beautiful son, Asher-was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in, and taking over her father's beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can't help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can she trust him completely . . . Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn't acknowledge the flashes of his father's temper in him, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he's hidden more than he's shared with her"--… (plus d'informations)

The most interesting thing about this book was the information about bees. I had no idea how intricate and fascinating their lives were. I found that the rest of the book attempted too many topics - gay marriage, biracial marriage, abusive relationships, and the issue of transgender. Jodi Picoult is known for including current topical issues in her books, and this one is no different despite a collaboration with another author. ( )

I listened to an audio book recording of Mad Honey. I didn't love it, although the story kept my interest enough for me to listen until the end. What I liked about the book: The character of Olivia, the progression of the trial, the information about bees and transgender people. What I didn't like: The voice of Lily (literally and figuratively), the preachy quality of some of the transgender information, and the repetitive nature of Lily's account of her experiences with Asher and the descriptions of time (it lasted a minute, or an hour, or a year, etc., etc., again and again). Jodi Piccoult's signature "surprise twist" was the powerful relevation of the fact that Lily was transgender, making the end "twist" about Maya unnecessary and annoying. Someone needs to tell her that the twist doesn't always have to be in the final chapter. ( )

This is the second book I've read about bees and I definitely liked it much more than other one. It wasn't just about bees of course. One thing I did learn early on is that when they get pissed off they have a pungent smell of bananas and a lot more that I never knew of course. The details about bees was overwhelming that's for sure.

However, this is not a book about bees only, it's about Olivia and her 18 year old son Asher, who's allegedly arrested for the murder of his girlfriend Lily. It alternates chapters with Asher, Olivia, and Lily before and after and during the trial. Jordan, Olivia's brother was Asher's attorney and was a good one at that. His wife Selena was an investigator was a big help in researching and discovered one thing that helped Asher during his trial.

It was an eye opening book with a few surprises along the way.

Quite a book that's all I can say and Jodi, you've done it again with excellent writing with thanks to Jennifer Finney Boylan, who had a dream about this which she mentioned at the end of the book. ( )

People always talk about how their love for you is unconditional. Then you reveal your most private self to them and you find out how your most private self to them and you find out how many conditions there are in unconditional love." p. 174
I have read many Jody Picoult books. At a certain point I decided not to read any more, but this was a book club choice.
What I liked: It gave me something to think about. I learned a lot about a subject that I knew very little about.
What I did not like: It hits all the Jody Picult tropes: family drama, a crisis involving a current social issue, a legal thriller, surprise ending.
This novel has the entire formula and therefore becomes predictable. Every current social issue is included: gender identity, gender confirmation surgery abuse, same-gender marriage, interracial marriage, jail conditions, abortion, suicide, the definition of feminism, intergenerational trauma, and murder.
Yes, life is messy but this was too much. I listened at 1.5 just to complete my obligation. ( )

This one’s for my other co-author, my brother-from-another-mother, Tom McDonald, who made me fall in love with writing all over again. I’ll work with you over any buggy collaboration program anytime, anywhere, and will lock you in the Writers’ Cage only when strictly necessary.

Susan Finney, my sister-in-law, is a lover of books, stories, red wine, dogs—-and me. Openhearted and generous, she has guided Boylans—-and Finneys—-on many journeys, even when we did not know the way. She’s a sister, a mother, and a grandmother, but above all: an angel.
