"Lythcott-Haims's narration is perfectly sincere and approachable. This is the type of audiobook that truly benefits from an author narration, given the importance of balancing authority with vulnerability...its advice and personal testimonials are inspiring to anyone trying to take responsibility for their life and role in the world." ?? New York Times bestselling author Julie Lythcott-Haims is back with a groundbreakingly frank guide to being a grown-up.
What does it mean to be an adult? In the twentieth century, psychologists came up with five markers of adulthood: finish your education, get a job, leave home, marry, and have children. Since then, every generation has been held to those same markers. Yet so much has changed about the world and living in it since that sequence was formulated. All of those markers are choices, and they're all valid, but any one person's choices along those lines do not make them more or less an adult.
A former Stanford dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising and author of the perennial bestseller How to Raise an Adult and of the lauded memoir Real American, Julie Lythcott-Haims has encountered hundreds of twentysomethings (and thirtysomethings, too), who, faced with those markers, feel they're just playing the part of "adult," while struggling with anxiety, stress, and general unease. In Your Turn, Julie offers compassion, personal experience, and practical strategies for living a more authentic adulthood, as well as inspiration through interviews with dozens of voices from the rich diversity of the human population who have successfully launched their adult lives.
Being an adult, it turns out, is not about any particular checklist; it is, instead, a process, one you can get progressively better at over time??becoming more comfortable with uncertainty and gaining the knowhow to keep going. Once you begin to practice it, being an adult becomes the most complicated yet also the most abundantly rewarding and natural thing. And Julie Lythcott-Haims is here to help listeners take their turn.

While I was not the target audience of this book I did find it very interesting. There were many things that I learned from this book and wish I had a book like this when I was learning to become an adult. A little preachy at times. I also thought that the author tried too hard trying not to offend anyone. To me part of adulting is getting your feathers ruffled and moving on.There are things to be learned in this book if you overlook some of the faults. ( )

Julie Lythcott-Haims guides us through the steps necessary to become an adult, using a mix of personal experiences, practical tips and vignettes. This book would be an excellent gift for those in your life who are about to embark on their journey as adults. ( )

The author gives teens and young adults a good starting place to evaluate their maturity and potentially identify areas they can improve upon. That said, the book is very daunting at over 400 pages. When the book got "slow" for me, the length was an additional factor that kept me from going back. While most of the advice was good and the writing was easy to understand, there were a few negatives that detracted from the book in addition to the length. I am not the author's target audience, but at times it felt like the author tried a little too hard to relate to the audience, throwing in curse words where they really weren't needed, and sometimes the stories felt entirely beyond what applies to most readers - the ones that can't go to Ivy League schools and be mentored by the best. It was a fun read and gave good advice, and did try to overcome the author's distance from the target audience by using stories from her students and those that came from less prosperous backgrounds, but overall this book was a little bit of a struggle to get through at times due to the mentioned negatives. Give it a try if you have time, but it is not a quick read. ( )

So, I am definitely an adult and while I may not be good at it I am most certainly there. I do, however, have two children who are young teenagers and who will one day be negotiating the world of adulthood. Is this book good for that purpose. I'm not entirely convinced that it helped me to help them in any way. Would this book be helpful if you are in your early twenties and trying to figure out adulting? Maybe? I just didn't get a whole lot out of this book but maybe it just wasn't written for me. I received this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program in exchange for an honest review. ( )

For some reason I though this book would be a sociological look at how and why attitudes toward adulthood have changed over time, so a lot of my disappointment comes from my own misplaced expectations. It’s self-help, pure and simple. I would give the book two stars based on how little I enjoyed it, but I'm being generous because of my own misunderstanding.

Each chapter starts with an anecdotal story from the author, includes a list of advice, and closes with 2-3 stories from 20-somethings she’s interviewed. The advice is average stuff you can find on a Buzzfeed listicle and I didn’t find the author’s personal perspective relatable. A story about connecting with people at work that includes a birthday party at the Stanford Faculty Club isn’t going to resonate with most people. To compensate, the author tried too hard to connect to their audience with lots of casual swearing and repeatedly using “adulting.” On top of all that, at over 400 pages this book desperately needs an editor.
