From Jennifer Niven, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places, comes an unforgettable new novel about a sensitive girl ready to live her bravest life--sex, heartbreak, family dramas, and all. Before: With graduation on the horizon, budding writer Claudine Henry is focused on three things: college in the fall, become a famous author, and the ever-elusive possibility of sex. She doesn't even need to be in love--sex is all she's looking for. Then her dad drops a bombshell: he and Claude's mom are splitting up. Suddenly, Claude's entire world feels like a lie, and the ground under her feet anything but stable. After: Claude's mom whisks them both away to a remote, mosquito-infested island off the coast of Georgia, a place where the two of them can start the painful process of mending their broken hearts. It's the last place Claude can imagine finding her footing, but then Jeremiah Crew happens. Miah is a local trail guide with a passion for photography, and a past he doesn't like to talk about. He's brash, enigmatic, and even more infuriatingly, he's the only one who seems to see Claude for who she wants to be. So when Claude decides to sleep with Miah, she tells herself it's just sex--exactly what she has planned. There isn't enough time to fall in love, especially if it means putting her already broken heart at risk. Compulsively readable and impossible to forget, Jennifer Niven's luminous new novel is an insightful portrait of a young woman determined to write her own next chapter--sex, resilience, mosquito bites, and all.… (plus d'informations)

Gr 9 Up—After Claudia's parents announce their separation, she and her mother spend the summer after high
school on a remote island, where Claude meets Jeremiah and rediscovers herself and her feelings about love. The
discussions of sex are refreshingly frank and positive, and Niven expertly examines common YA themes—the desire
for independence, evolving friendship, new romance, family tensions—with standout authenticity and heart.

I'm going to DNF this at 60% because the only reason I'm still reading is because I've already invested so much reading but as a result I'm not reading because I'm not excited to read. Nothing about this feels original or exciting, not even an island with little cell service. A confident main character is fun, but that's about all that's speaking to me. ( )

I so loved Niven's previous two novels (All the Bright Places and Holding Up the Universe) and had high hopes for this one, but it just wasn't grabbing me after the first 70 pages. Nothing specific I can point to; I may come back to it later. In fact, I liked the way Niven had her main character, Claudine, process important conversations with people in her life: first, she says what she hears, then she relates what was actually said ("And maybe he says none of this, really, but it's what I hear").

"It was one of those tragedies that my mom the writer refers to as a defining moment: that moment when life suddenly changes and you're left picking up the pieces. She says it's actually how you pick up the pieces that defines you." (27)

...”ready for our next adventure.”
What! Where are the words, the text. Oh that is the end. Yet the story of Claude and Miah ended perfectly, until you write your own next chapter, or maybe you choose to savour the summer they spent together on the quiet island located off the tip of Georgia.

Claudine Henry’s life is really good, in fact, she belongs to a family that is a perfect unit of three, or maybe five if you include Bradbury and Dandelion. Claude is on the verge of her high school graduation, when her dad comes uncharacteristically into her room to tell her that he and her mom are splitting up. She’s already filled with uncertainty of what life holds after graduation. Will she and her best friend, Saz, stay connected after school ends? Will she lose her virginity? Can she actually become the writer she wants to be? And now the floor feels like it’s been pulled out from under her, even more so when her mother whisks her to a remote island off Georgia’s coast. Now Claude feels she is exiled as they are now cut off from civilization and normal communication like WiFi and cell phone service or phone service at all!

On the slow and quiet island, Claude tries to imagine being brave, even as she begins a potentially risky and exciting relationship with handsome, nature-loving Jeremiah, called “Miah.”

The story begins slowly, and Claude’s torrent of emotions... wanting and not wanting Miah, hating and not hating her father, loving and resenting her mother and best friend are all very real emotions for anyone, yet alone a teen uprooted from everything familiar.

The author intimately and sensually depicts Claude’s determination to know herself and her body, and to genuinely connect with Miah and all those new and uncertain feelings teens face as they explore and come of age.

Jennifer Niven says she has written the book she wished she had available to read when she was in experiencing the teen years.

This is for a more mature reader as it is a frank story of love, sex, divorce, and finding ones own self.
Ages 14–up.
