Not quite sure what to think, because it's hard to judge without reading the other 4 Abarat books out there / planned. ( )

La prima cosa da dire di Abarat è che è un mondo e non soltanto un libro. Il lettore non si limita a leggere, ma entra in Abarat, trasportato dal Mar d'Izabella insieme alla protagonista, Candy Quackenbush.

Merito di ciò è sicuramente anche delle illustrazioni dell'autore che impreziosiscono il romanzo: così possiamo seguire a fianco a fianco Candy in tutte le sue avventure e meravigliarci con lei davanti alle stravaganti (a dir poco) creature che popolano Abarat. L'immaginazione non fa certo difetto al signor Barker, che ha inserito nel suo libro creature che saltellano a pelo d'acqua, glifi (cioè macchine volanti fatte di luce e magia) e ladri matricolati a otto teste.

Il mondo stesso che queste creature abitano – Abarat, appunto – è favoloso: ventiquattro isole, una per ogni ora del giorno, alle quali si aggiunge la misteriosa Venticinquesima Ora, dove spazio e tempo si confondono. Essendo le Ore così territorialmente divise in isole, Notte e Giorno assumono l'importanza di Male e Bene, in eterna lotta ed equilibrio tra di loro. O almeno lo sono stati finché non si è intromesso un terzo elemento... Cosa accade se quel Male non è più così Male? E se il Bene non riesce a trovare il Male “giusto” da combattere?

Una favola horror per ragazzi che si fa leggere volentieri anche dai grandi; una favola piena di commistioni tra razze; una favola dove anche Bene e Male si confondono, dove i sorrisi celano malvagi e aspetti grotteschi rivelano gentilezza. Un romanzo pieno di magia, mistero e fascino; un mondo indimenticabile. ( )

One of my favorite series by Cliver Barker. You definately have to read the version with the illustrations, as they add to the overall effect of the book. I've read it several times and get a different thing from it each time. Barker creates a wonderful world that you fall into along with Candy Quackenbush. ( )

This book started really strong. In fact, I originally recorded ⭐⭐⭐⭐ in my reading journal. However, the arc of the story dropped my review down to ⭐⭐⭐.



I started this for a reading challenge because I needed something that took place in my hometown/state OR something nautical. I’m going with the nautical element for this one, because it’s one of the most creative nautical books I’ve read. The writing in the beginning of this book hooked me hard, but that alone didn’t keep my interest.

No cliffhanger, but I’m wondering if there is a better story arc across all the novels. ( )

I loved this book.Ive never read anything by Clive Barker.He was in short not my kind of author.Then I read this book and couldnt put it down. ( )
