"A moving, portrait of depression, from the host of the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression "This book is an excellent life raft for those of us who are so sure that we are alone in our struggles. You should read it." -Jenny Lawson "A funny, honest book about depression, and what you can do despite it." -Neil Gaiman "Candid and funny and intimate." -Susan Orlean For years John Moe, critically-acclaimed public radio personality and host of The Hilarious World of Depression podcast, struggled with depression; it plagued his family and claimed the life of his brother in 2007. As Moe came to terms with his own illness, he began to see similar patterns of behavior and coping mechanisms surfacing in conversations with others, including high-profile comedians who'd struggled with the disease. Moe saw that there was tremendous comfort and community in open dialogue about these shared experiences and that humor had a unique power. Thus was born the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression. Inspired by the immediate success of the podcast, Moe has written a remarkable investigation of the disease, part memoir of his own journey, part treasure trove of laugh-out-loud stories and insights drawn from years of interviews with some of the most brilliant minds facing similar challenges. Throughout the course of this powerful narrative, depression's universal themes come to light, among them, struggles with identity, lack of understanding of the symptoms, the challenges of work-life, self-medicating, the fallout of the disease in the lives of our loved ones, the tragedy of suicide, and the hereditary aspects of the disease. The Hilarious World of Depression illuminates depression in an entirely fresh and inspiring way. Edit"--… (plus d'informations)

DNF @ Page 176. Just lost interest, though I like John Moe's writing style. ( )

I don't think it was the author's intent, but he made depression sound like such a singular type of illness, that most people experience in the same way, and treat more or less identically. At times it almost came across as judgmental. It took away from what was an otherwise poignant and well-written memoir. ( )

There were so many times that I just stared at the page thinking: YES. THAT IS EXACTLY IT. I also really enjoyed his sense of humor and music references. I have not listened to this podcast but that will be immediately remedied. ( )

I think that major depressive disorder is very different for each person, but this book is from the point of view of a white man. He's also a white man who is married to a stable white woman, who gave him support about his illness. His experience is very different from mine: a white woman . My experience is very different from that of a brown or black woman, with major depressive disorder. This makes all the difference in the world. ( )

The book would have benefited from a tighter structure, but it’s inspiring and relatable for readers with depression.

Yet the message of the book is a good one: that mental illness is not a cause for shame, and that sharing honestly (and even humorously) with fellow sufferers can be a path to healing. If there are readers out there who still believe, as Moe once did, that “mental illness is for people in the booby hatch doing sad craft projects with safety scissors” as in “Girl, Interrupted,” this book could be their path to deeper understanding and openness, by way of laughter in the dark.

I don't always read book prefaces, so I figured I'd name mine something exciting to get you to check it out. (Preface: "The Big Sexy Celebrity Laser Fight)
It was summer outside, bright and humid, and I was inside sitting in a big poofy chair, ready to get into it with a new therapist.

Here's the weird part: even when I was in the darkest and most despairing times of my depression, I still found depression funny. It was funny to me that the illness distorted my view of the real world like a funhouse mirror. It was funny that I could be immobilized by something that had no basis in a broken bone or a bacteria or any tangible factor. (1: "In Which I Finally Get Better")
Addiction is a disease, but free will must be part of it, right? If I'm addicted or depressed, and I kill someone, I'm still responsible and I'm still going to jail. And that free will portion of Rick and Dad was the part that made me so confused, and subsequently angry. I was angry because I couldn't do anything. (8 : "Seeing the World with Clear Eyes, p. 132")
