"Paddy Pallin was born Frank Austin Pallin in 1900 in the north of England and migrated to Australia in 1926." "In 1929 he married his English fiancee, May, and together with a small band of enthusiasts, made many camping, canoeing and hiking trips. A year later, a victim of the Depression, Paddy lost his job. Typically, he saw this as an opportunity and boldly started making lightweight gear for campers and bushwalkers. Using his own designs and a treadle sewing machine in his bedroom, business commenced. Before long, he was renting premises in George Street, Sydney, and Paddy Pallin was on the road to becoming a household name in camping, bushwalking and ski touring." "With wit and keen observation, Paddy recounts his varied and full life - from his days as a boy scout hiking on the Yorkshire Moors to expeditions through the rugged Australian bushland, chilling swims down turbulent rivers and exhausting treks across snowy peaks and ridges." "Still a regular walker, Paddy Pallin's life is an inspiration for all of us through his energy and enterprise combined with a genuine concern for the conservation of the bush."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
