A perfect thriller . . . a thoughtful commentary on Americas opioid crisis and an utterly satisfying mystery.Janelle Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Watch Me Disappear

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LIBRARY JOURNAL

Sadie Keller is determined to find out how her brother died, even if no one else thinks its worth investigating. Untimely deaths are all too common in rural Blackwater, Kansas, where crime and overdoses are on the rise, and the small-town police force is consumed with the recent discovery of a childs skull in the woods. Sadie is on her own, delving into the dark corners of a life her brother kept hidden and unearthing more questions than answers.

Eighteen-year-old Henley Pettit knows more than shed like to about the seedy side of Blackwater, and shes desperate to escape before shes irreparably entangled in her familys crimes. She dreams of disappearing and leaving her old life behind, but shedding the past is never easy, and getting out of town will be far more dangerous than she ever imagined.

As more bones are found in the woods, time is running out for Sadie to uncover the truth and for Henley to make her escape. Both women are torn between family loyalties and the weight of the secrets they carry, knowing full well that while some secrets are hard to live with, others will get you killed.

Like Laura McHughs previous award-winning thrillers, The Weight of Blood and Arrowood, The Wolf Wants In is an atmospheric, beautifully told novel that barrels toward a twisting, chilling end and keeps us turning the page to find out how these small-town secrets will unraveland who will survive.

Praise for The Wolf Wants In

The Wolf Wants In perfectly balances gripping suspense with stunning, lyrical prosea rare combination, but one that seems to be McHughs signature gift. Atmospheric and chilling, this novel takes place in the twisted, destructive wake of the opioid crisis as one woman struggles for justice and another for redemption. A truly thrilling read.Jill Orr, author of the Riley Ellison mysteries.

The Wolf Wants in by Laura McHugh is a mystery story that is told through the narration of two characters, both women and both residents of the small town in Kansas that has declined into apathy from drugs, alcohol and crime. Sadie Keller is determined to find out how her brother died even though it was registered as a “natural” death and eighteen-year-old Henley Pettit wants to escape the town and her family reputation’s for being behind most of the crimes being committed.

When bones are found in the nearby woods neither woman realizes that time is running out both for Sadie to discover the truth and Henley to make her escape. Family loyalty and dangerous secrets abound in this book as the characters deal with their grief, frustration and suspicions. Using the Opioid crisis as a backbone to the story, the author delivers a solid rural crime story.

While The Wolf Wants in is an effective mystery, I found that I wasn’t as emotionally drawn in as I would have hoped. The story is dark and gritty but somehow the characters didn’t gel for me. This is the second book by this author that I have read and I can see I will be reading more by her in the future. My slight hesitations regarding this book could very well be from my being so emotionally invested in the previous book that I read. ( )

Would have earned a fourth star, but I listened on audio, and one of the two narrators was AWFUL. She spoke in a tiny, lisping baby voice that was just not appropriate to the character. It was a bizarre casting choice - she does not seem to be an established narrator. Maybe she’s a friend of the author? The story and characters were compelling or I’d have abandoned it. ( )

Wow...I was kind of blown away by this book. Highly emotional and full of real people with real emotional baggage, this is definitely not a happily ever after story. If you’ve ever been affected by drug use, especially by someone close to you, you’ll feel the heartache involved here. Although there is so much more to this story, ultimately the battle is far too real for many. ( )

told in alternating voices and timelines between Sadie and Henley. Sisters Sadie and Becca lost their brother Shaun too soon at 36. They cant get a straight answer from his horrible wife Crystal. she said it was his heart, but there is implications of drug use like a lot of meth oxy users in their rural community. sadie & becca show up at shauns only to find crystal and the criminal Pettit family stripping everything out of the house to sell, including their grandpa non working gun. they cant take his beloved firebird he restored because he left it to his mother. they also get their grandma's pie safe because crystal thinks its too ugly to sell. little do they know he hid clues to his murder in those 2 things. henley, missy. sullivans earl and jason. sadie's bestfriend hannah and her missing daughter and husband whose bones are found in the woods ( )

Anyone on the fence about reading this book should just start reading it. Excellent character development. I love a great psychological thriller, and this one exceeded my expectations. I will be passing on to my reading buddies. ( )

Greg had wanted to have more children right away and I'd wanted to wait, and as time went by, our marriage became as frustrating as the baby sweater I'd tried to knit for Lil—a few dropped stitches, a pulled thread, and it was suddenly completely unrecognizable from the pattern I'd attempted to follow.
I thought of the skull, of whomever it belonged to lying alone in the woods night after night as the moon came and went, scavengers going about their solemn work, and hoped that Hannah Calhoun would never have to think of Macey in the past tense the way I still had trouble doing with Shane.
She owned her reputation by then, wearing rumors like illicit Girl Scout badges, and was glad for the opportunity he gave her, not just to earn a living, but to spend her days surrounded by fancy things—monogrammed silverware made of actual silver, an espresso machine that steamed your milk, central air conditioning—that she herself would never have.
Henley opened the wide windows and listened as the corn whispered all around. She felt safe here, surrounded by the fields, the vast expanse of shuffling leaves the closest thing she'd seen to an ocean.
She had imagined once or twice what it might be like to kiss him—a harmless mental exercise that she'd indulged in, understandably, after seeing him sprawled naked in his bed—but she hadn't anticipated the rush it would bring, the sense of disorientation after he pulled away, as though the world had tilted and clicked back into place at a slightly different angle.
