Harriet Tubman Freedom Fighter
This book took the reader on the life’s Journey of Harriet Tubman as a young woman turned slave and moved to the united states. It hears where you learn her struggles, her coma she gained, her Seizures, how she escaped her Master, and her role in the Civil War. All told in a short story that illustrates a woman who risked danger and her own freedom just to save the freedoms of others. And despite the odds and her mental condition, she was able to preserver and never get caught while saving hundreds of slaves.
This was a very short lovely book. It got right to the information bit and did not drag too much on the information that needed to be elaborated on. You learn bits of useful information about Harriet Tubman like her mental disability and her coma that may fascinate the reader if they heard of her but did not know much about her. The art was superb and the way the colors contrasted and looked different worked very well and all was eye catching to the reader. Enjoyment was still good but despite the shortness it sacrificed some more of the interesting info. Switching from new info to new info that can be overwhelming. Word difficulty is great and varied for kids just getting a grasp on reading and informational pieces so would be best for probably around the k-2nd grades. Overall a solid book that I can recommend to those who want to start challenging a reader’s reading level.

Memorability 3/5
Art 5/5
Enjoyment 3/5
Word Difficulty 5/5
Interesting info 3.5/5
Overall: 3.5/5. Great story
Best Use: Told to the class, to help those struggling or getting introduced to higher reading levels. ( )

In Harriet Tubman, Freedom Fighter, Hohn looks briefly at the life of Araminta “Minty” Ross, later known as Harriet Tubman. The book begins with Tubman’s birth and moves through her life as a slave, leader on the Underground Railroad, reunification with her family, marriage, opening of a home for elderly African Americans and her role as a women’s rights activist. In the back of the book, there is a timeline, map and extra information about Tubman’s life that is not included in the main text of the book.
This version of a Harriet Tubman biography is truly basic and sparse on facts. There are topics that are introduced in one sentence, like Tubman’s name change, and left open for later exploration. The paragraphs jumped around from topic to topic leaving the book feeling disjointed. For this short of a book, it may have worked better if the author chose one aspect of Minty’s life to explore, rather than trying to hit on so many topics. Overall, there are better written introductory books about Harriet “Minty” Tubman. ( )
