"This book feels like a real conversation. When we enter Retta's world we are at the best party and in the hands of a gracious, self-perceptive, and deeply hilarious host." Amy Poehler
This program is read by the author.
In this hilarious audiobook essay collection, Parks and Recreation star Retta shares the stories that led to her success in Hollywood.

In So Close to Being the Sh*t, Y'all Don't Even Know, Parks and Recreation star Retta takes us on her not-so-meteoric rise from roaches to riches (well, rich enough that she can buy $15,000 designer handbags yet scared enough to know she's always a heartbeat away from ramen with American cheese).
Throwing her hard-working Liberian parents through a loop, Retta abandons her plan to attend med school after graduating Duke University to move to Hollywood to star in her own sitcomlike her comedy heroes Lucille Ball and Roseanne.
Say what? Word. Turns out Retta might actually be on to something. After winning Comedy Central's stand-up competition, she should be ready for prime timebut a fear of success derails her biggest dream.
Whether reminiscing about her days as a contract chemist at GlaxoSmithKline, telling "dirty" jokes to Mormons, feeling like the odd man out on Parks, fending off racist trolls on Twitter, flirting with Michael Fassbender, or expertly stalking the cast of "Hamilton," Retta's unique voice and refreshing honesty will make you laugh, cry, and laugh so hard you'll cry.
Her eponymous sitcom might not have happened yet, but by the end of So Close to Being the Sh*t, listeners will be rooting for Retta to be the next one-named wonder to take over your television. And she just might inspire you to reach for the stars, too.
More Praise for So Close to Being the Sh*t, Y'all Don't Even Know:
"Two things 1) Don't yell 'Treat Yo Self' at Retta if you see her in person, a lot of people have done that already, just whisper it to yourself and give her a thumbs up. That'd be cool. 2) Check out her book. Stop reading this quote and buy it already, boo boo." Aziz Ansari, bestselling author of Modern Romance

"Hollywood has no more honest, hilarious, or necessary guide than Retta. If her tweets aren't enough, get ready for the fullness of her vision you're gonna laugh. You're gonna think. You're gonna be hella glad you came." Lena Dunham, star of Girls and bestselling author of Not That Kind of Girl
"Reading this book is like having the best coffee date with the life-long friend I wish I had. Retta makes me laugh and feel so hard." America Ferrara

Disclaimer: Stopped listening on second disc of 6.

20-plus minutes of someone gushing about handbags is about 19 minutes and 30 seconds too long for me. After the $15,000 handbag story, I ejected the book. I couldn’t relate and didn’t want to.

I was hoping listening to this would be like when I read Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, and Other Concerns. I had never watched The Office but all her talk about the show and the other actors got me interested, and it turned out to be one of my favorites. I thought a similar kind of magic might happen with Retta’s book.

Well, I’m sure I’ll get back to the show sometime, but this book just wasn’t doing it for me. I bet I’m missing out on some good stuff by quitting now, but handbags did me in. ( )

Did not know Retta was a twitter phenomenon. Had I known this, the book would 've been more enjoyable for me.

I wanted to hear more about Parcs & Rec, her strugles as an actress, her other roles, and less about the things she loves to buy and watch. Once I realised that was what the book is about, I was on board. But, it took me a while since I expected something different.

Liked the fact that there was very little diet talk. ( )

This is a fun book. I didn’t know anything about Retta apart from her being on Parks & Rec. But this book made me really fall in love with her humour. ( )

I love listening to audiobook memoirs and essays that are narrated by the author. So I had this at the top of my library loans list.

Aside from recognizing Retta as part of the Parks and Recreation cast (a show I’ve never watched), I knew next to nothing about her. She’s a comedian, actress and now author of a collection of essays that are about shopping, social media and her early career as a comedian. I’ll admit, I wasn’t crazy about this collection. Retta is a great performer and she’s funny – you can’t help but chuckle at some of her observations. But overall, the collection lacked any real insight or substance.

In one chapter, Retta mentions how her comedy is different from “black” comedy and how it affects where she’s booked to perform – a topic I wanted to hear more of her perspective on but she didn’t spend a lot of time elaborating.

In another chapter, Retta goes to great lengths to explain her gift-giving style and spends somewhere around 7 minutes pleading with the reader to not feel obligated to buy her a gift since she’s notoriously picky. And since I can’t imagine a circumstance where that would be a problem for me, I was really curious who the hell she wrote this book for.

Retta also goes into great detail about her love of Hamilton (boring), her Twitter feuds (super boring), and her unlikely love for a hockey team (yawn). “So Close to Being the Sh*t Ya’ll Don’t Even Know” isn’t necessarily a bad book, I just don’t think there was a general thesis or purpose to it. Listened to on Audible. Love Retta on Parks and Rec, and I'm a sucker for celeb memoirs so this was a no-brainer for me. She does not filter her language, so if you have a low tolerance for swearing, you've been warned. My favorite story she told: when she showed up at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah to do a standup set...as soon as she said Snow College I burst out laughing...I had all the correct images in my head...
