The book opens quoting the "military-industiral complex" warning from Eisenhower's departure-from-office speech, in 1961. But the book is set well before then, the 3rd in a series leading up to why Ike had to say that. And, well, I guess we live in the morass Ike worked to support before he warned us against what he himself contributed to! Moralizing aside, this book paints a clear picture of how business forces moved following WWII, and of forces - fictional? real? - that presumably tried to combat business strong-arming the country. I found it hard to read, how much due to subject matter and how much due to writing style & structure I can't say, truthfully. But quite apart from the political reality, the story itself is full of intrigue and suspense, to say the least! In summary, Voices Behind the Curtain is a captivating historical fiction novel with engaging characters and a gripping plot. The authors expertly combine history and fiction, transporting readers across the globe. With its accessible narrative and thought-provoking themes, this book is highly recommended for fans of the genre. This book is third in a trilogy and is a historical political thriller that exposes the levels of greed and corruption that led to WWII and that exist to this day. Though it is the third book in The Sentinels trilogy, it is perfectly effective as a stand alone story (I have not read the first two books in the series yet). The plots are intricately woven in an international web of deceit and intrigue, taking place not long after WWII. The Sentinels are a group of six highly educated men and women who have banded together to try to keep corruption and fascism at bay and prevent future global wars. They have the background, expertise and wherewithal to pull if off, too! I kept being reminded of a Marvel superhero team, with intellect as their superpower. Reading the book gave me a bittersweet feeling, because so many of the details of the corruption, greed and disintegration of our Democracy, the corruption that has led to the out of control spending on the military, and Congressional corruption that we now witness every day ring true and are based on facts, though the story itself is fictional. Unfortunately, we have no Super Heroes, such as The Sentinels; to step in and save us. It's a highly entertaining read and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I received this book through the Library Thing Early Reviewers program, and am glad to have been introduced to The Sentinel trilogy. I'm definitely planning on reading the first two books in the series. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. I liked the concept for the book and the plot line and admire the author for wanting to write his own book without assistance from outside sources. However, I wish the author would have reconsidered accepting help from others on this. There were quite a few typos and areas where the writing was clunky and would have benefited from proofreading. Further, and this may be due to the fact that the book is part of a series, but I would have appreciated a more thorough delineation of the power cycle concept. As a doctoral candidate myself, it just seems less realistic without that added context considering this is the characters' research area and they spent years analyzing it. It was just a tad vague. The story itself wasn't bad, though! aucune critique | ajouter une critique
