This introduction to Catholicism "combines scholarly depth with an engaging style to present the what and why of Catholic belief with exceptional clarity" (Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia). In The Light of Christ, Fr. Thomas Joseph White provides an accessible presentation of Catholic doctrine that is both grounded in traditional theology and engaged with contemporary concerns. Inspired by the theologies of Irenaeus, Thomas Aquinas, and John Henry Newman, Father White covers the major doctrines of the Christian religion including knowledge of God, the mystery of the Trinity, the incarnation and the atonement, the sacraments and the moral life, eschatology and prayer. The Light of Christ also addresses topics such as evolution, the modern historical study of Jesus and the Bible, and objections to Catholic moral teaching. Authoritative yet accessible, this book serves as an excellent introduction for general readers or as a helpful text for theology courses in a university context. "This is a book that offers itself as a companion ... My goal is to make explicit in a few broad strokes the shape of Catholicism. I hope to outline its inherent intelligibility or form as a mystery that is at once visible and invisible, ancient and contemporary, mystical and reasonable." 'Father White, from the Introduction.… (plus d'informations)

The Light of Christ presents an introduction to the beliefs and practices of Catholicism. In this work, Fr. White presents Catholicism as a worldview rather than a book of doctrine. He does this by weaving together the liturgical, spiritual, theological, and philosophical threads of the Catholic tradition. Or, in another way, he presents Catholicism as a way of life rather than a system of belief. This style is most beneficial when dealing with current controversies. He acknowledges teachings that are difficult, explains them, and puts them in light of the complete tradition rather than dealing with them in isolation. Therefore, difficult issues are presented as a deviation from the worldview rather than an exception to be solved. While subtitled "An Introduction to Catholicism," this is not a basic work. Fr. White deals with concepts and themes that may test a person who is new to studying theology or philosophy. While staying faithful to Catholic tradition, his discussion of the death penalty does not reflect updates made to the Catechism by Pope Francis. This book is highly recommended and is appropriate for Parish and College libraries. ( )

- The Light of Christ provides an accessible presentation of Catholicism that is grounded in traditional theology, but engaged with a host of contemporary questions or objections Fr. Thomas Joseph White presents major doctrines of the Christian religion in a way that is comprehensible for non-specialists: knowledge of God, the mystery of the Trinity, the Incarnation and the atonement, the sacraments and the moral life, eschatology and prayer.
