(2002)(audio) very good & funny story about a rock & roll star that dies mysteriously and the obit writer that tries to find out who & why he was murdered. Turns out it was his washed-up singer wife who wanted her husband's latest hit song but he wouldn't let her cover it. Hiaasen is very good story teller about Miami area politics and personalities.

Talk about a 2002 book that wears its age on its sleeve. There's a lot about the philosophy of newspapers that it turned out was wildly optimistic, even though it probably seemed cynical at the time.

As with all Hiaasen, some clever turns of phrase, and decent plotting, but even though all the narrative comes together, it never reaches the heights of his more satirical books. This is more a plot-driven mystery[1], and it spends far too much time on a rather gross relationship between a 47-year-old reporter and his 27-year-old editor. Even if we allow for the idea that this isn't fantasy projection, it's pretty icky.

Still, for relatively breezy somewhat funny prose, Hiaasen books are excellent palatte-cleansers between heavier works, and it served well for that purpose.

[1] Maybe it's because I watched the John Darnielle episode of Poker Face fairly recently, but I had the mystery pegged after 3 chapters, and I'm not bragging; most of you good people will have it figured out even sooner. ( )

An obit writer solves the murder. The bad guys are the music business and selling-out by newspapers. No land developers in this one; mostly mainstream characters. ( )

OK but not amazing. Jack, the main character seemed somewhat unlikable to me. Plot was OK but a little predictable. I think I would have liked the humor 20 years ago but maybe I have outgrown this type of thing. Mostly will appeal to men. ( )
