Ever since Blindness years ago, every Saramago book is carved into my bones. I can't read them too quickly or risk the marrow spilling out. In Ursula Le Guin's beautiful eulogy she said it best - "He got ahead of us; he is ahead of us. His work belongs to our future." ( )
History of five generations in Portugal. Poverty, strikes for better pay, religion, military service, family bonds. Could do with a family tree in the book. Describes the Latifundio, torture, arrests, prisoners, executions, work in the wheat fields and harvesting cork oaks, and the security police "PIDE". One member of the family had blue eyes. Interesting, but not very exciting. ( )
I was quite disappointed by this book. The narrative sections beautifully and powerfully convey the exploitation of the latifundia system, but the many, often lengthy, expository passages are heavy-handed rants that undercut the impact of the story.. ( )
