Romance. Historical Fiction. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Witches of East End and the Descendants series comes the love story of young Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler.

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York societyâ??s biggest events: the Schuylersâ?? grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling countryâ??s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughtersâ??Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival those of both her sisters, though sheâ??d rather be aiding the colonistsâ?? cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, Eliza can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washingtonâ??s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he canâ??t believe his luckâ??as an orphan, and a bastard one at thatâ??to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

I had recently read Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, which I highly recommend. I have been supplementing my non-fiction with historical fiction about the same topics; however, this idea has not turned out quite as planned. I usually prefer the non-fiction and this one is no exception.

Alex & Eliza is set during the American Revolution; however, the characters do not speak or act in a historically accurate manner. Be aware if you read this that the entire second half (and perhaps more) is pure imagination and has nothing to do with what actually happened. Not that it has to conform to facts. It is fiction, after all. But Alexander Hamilton led a colorful life, and there is plenty of material to transform into a fictional account without becoming massively historically inaccurate.

I decided to treat it as a romance, and ignore that it is supposedly about real people, so I could finish it. I do not particularly care for romance novels, with rare exceptions, so if you like the genre, you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. I listened to the audio book read by Casandra Campbell. She does a nice job of giving voice to the characters. ( )

Absolutely adorable YA historical fiction about Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler, who had a whirlwind romance back during the American Civil War. This was swoony and sweet with lots of chemistry between the two leads, and I enjoyed the cute old-fashioned courtship, historical details, and Eliza’s sass. Really looking forward to the sequel, which is coming out soon!

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

My only real beef with this book is the lack of an author's note; when it comes to historical fiction, an explanation of which bits were made up and what sources the author used is essential and neglecting this is unforgivable, as far as I'm concerned. The novel itself is a fluffy, easy-to-read tale. ( )

This novel started well and had me chuckling on occasion but the second-half fizzled out so much I was glad when I reached the last page. While I liked Eliza for her determination and strength of character, for me, Aunt Gertrude was the star of "Alex and Eliza". She was a delight.

Unfortunately, like so many YA novels, this one had potential but didn't deliver. ( )

Very sweet version of the courtship of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler. I definitely liked all the tiny musical callouts throughout the book. That being said, the book did not rely on the musical to tell the story. It told the more accurate timeline of events, with Angelica's marriage and Peggy's courtship. I am in for the rest of the series. ( )

Beloved by you, I can be happy in any situation, and can struggle with every embarrassment of fortune with patience and firmness.  I cannot however forbear enter entreating you to realize our union on the dark side and satisfy, without deceiving yourself, how far your affection for me can make you happy in a privation of those elegancies to which you have been accustom.  If fortune should smile upon us, it will do us no harm to have been prepared for adversity; if she frowns upon us, by being prepared, we shall encounter it without the chagrin of disappointment.  Your future rank in life is a perfect lottery; you may move in an exalted you may move in a very humble sphere; the last is most probable; examine your heart.  --Letter from Alexander Hamilton to Elizabeth Schuyler, August 1780
