SHADOWLANDS is a mature romantic drama, opting for a more withdrawn emotional façade in telling an otherwise looming tragedy. While Debra Winger displays admirable control in her character's acerbic edge, it's Anthony Hopkins who traces a clearer emotional arc that packs a punch. One of the greatest love stories. ( )

CS Lewis taught at Oxford during the 1950s. Poet Joy Gresham, came to meet him Oxford and they fell in love. Tragically, Joy developed cancer and they realised they would only have a little time together.

I do not know why but the sound on the PAL DVD is different than on the VHS making Debra Winger's voice a bit higher pitched, and taking the edge off of it which should be there for this role. I prefer the American version. ( )

Lewis (Anthony Hopkins), the renowned author of "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, is a bachelor and Oxford University professor who spends his free time debating with fellow academics at a pub. Although he seems entirely uninterested in love, Lewis agrees to marry Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), an American writer who is looking to secure British citizenship. Their arrangement soon becomes a romance, and, when Joy is diagnosed with terminal cancer, their bond grows even stronger.
