When people talk about Manchester and art the two people that always get mentioned are LS Lowry and his teacher Adolphe Valette. While both are excellent artists, Manchester was not a soulless place in the nineteenth century, culturally there were plenty of artists. For those talents are now more often forgotten, Susan Thomson reminds us of those forgotten artists. Both male and female.
The book is full of new and interesting information, and it gives a different view of Manchester and the art culture within the city at that time. It is easy to read and contains information for many which will be new. It does raise the question of why have they been forgotten, even though their art hangs in many galleries, not just in Manchester but across the UK.
An excellent introduction to Manchester’s Art scene in the Victorian Period. ( )
