"By Christmas Day 1780, Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan, who was operating deep behind the British forces under Cornwallis, appeared to be threatening to attack Fort Ninety Six in South Carolina. Cornwallis dispatched in pursuit the only unit at his common which was swift enough and seasoned enough to out flank and drive the American force back. The result was the rout of Col. Banastre Tarleton in the Battle of the Cowpens (17 January 1781), the most resounding defeat the British army experienced during the American Revolution. The tactics employed by Morgan to achieve this victory are taught in every major military academy in the world. Who were these American soldiers who changed the direction of the war and caused the chain of events which led to Yorktown and the surrender of all British forces in America? This book, is based on Federal Pension Applications; State payments; Draper's Manuscripts; Heitman's List of Continental officers; Muster Rolls; the Delaware Archives; State Legislature Journals; Maryland Archives; the Cowpens Papers; National Archives holdings, Memoirs of certain soldiers; and other primary resources; endeavors to answer that question. The entries are alphabetic by surnames and contain the following, if found: date and place of birth; name of wife; date and place of marriage; death date of soldier; and a concise record of his services. Contained in his service record is the following: rank, if other than private; name of officers served under; name of unit; list of battles; wounded or not; if taken prisoner; place to which he emigrated after the war; and names of children of the soldier. Also included are reference sources upon which the sketch of the soldier is based. Genealogists, military historians, and individuals who have an interest in the American Revolution will find this book to be valuable." --provided by Google Books.
