After losing his best friend to another guy, the notoriously too-confident Max Emory suddenly feels lost. He may have devastatingly good looks, an abundance of charm, and a claim to one of the biggest hotel empires around, but he has no ambition anymore. So when his fed-up friends decide they've had enough of his moping, they sign him up to be the next bachelor on the reality series Love Island. And between his pride and his forged signature on an ironclad contract, Max just can't say no.Now he's stranded in paradise with twenty-four women, one terrifying goat, and Becca, the breathtaking barista who already turned him down back home. The closer Max gets to Becca, the more determined he becomes to win her over. As she gets to know him better, things start heating up. But is Becca really after Max's heart--or is she after the cash prize she could claim once the cameras stop rolling?… (plus d'informations)

Though I was excited for the premise of this book, the voice felt rather juvenile and there was no tension throughout this book to keep me reading. I loved Kiera Cass's Selection series and I have an odd intrigue with The Bachelor, but this fell short of my expectations.

The premise involved Max being sent to an island with 25 girls on a gameshow. Though I tried to suspend my disbelief, there were too many issues of plausibility with the gameshow and the way it was set up. Max's friends had so much involvement with picking the details of the show that it didn't feel at all real. If the producers really wanted a good show, there would be 25 attractive and intelligent girls, not one amazing girl, one 'normal girl' to show Max how amazing the first was, and 23 crazy girls/non-English speakers to deter him. The game ended early and there were few details on competitions other than those that involved Becca.

This was told in third person with Max having most of the chapters but a few being told by Becca. Max's voice was too overdone--if it had been a little toned down I might have enjoyed it, but the stream of conscious narration reminded me of the writing I did in middle school. Becca had a little bit of personality, but though I could relate to needing to pay for school and being driven to a career, there were some things that didn't line up. She wanted to go to graduate school and then be an elementary school teacher, when usually one would work for a few years at least as an elementary school teacher and then go to graduate schools. It wasn't explained when this story took place and how she was getting the time off school/work to participate in the game.

The first few chapters were told before the gameshow and were just...strange. I felt uncomfortable reading them and wasn't really sure what they added to the story. There was a backstory between Milo and Max that could have been intriguing but ended up only being confusing.

Becca didn't seem at all interested in a playboy without a career. By the end, Max was still just a playboy, though he gained a minor interest in investing. I don't understand what the effect of Rex's big 'reveal' at the end was. The ending itself had no tension at all and was really rather predictable.

Overall, I was disappointed by this book, despite being so excited for the premise.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

The gangs all back with the second installment of Rachel Van Dyken’s Consequence Series. I will admit, I laughed so hard with the Consequences of Loving Colton that I didn’t think this one would be as good. I have never been so happy to be so wrong!

The story picks up where the Consequences of Loving Colton left off. Jason, tired of Max constantly hanging around and taking up space, decides to sign him up for the dating reality show “Love Island”. In Max’s defense, being rich, charming, and wallowing in self pity at having lost his best friend (Milo) to another man, he doesn’t know what to do with his life (cue world’s smallest violin). Add in being rejected by an attractive barista (come on – those lines work 70% of the time), he’s in desperate need of purpose and direction (accordingly to Jason – Max is very much in denial).

To the rescue, Jason, Milo, and Colton (with the help a few emails sent on Max’s behave and a forged signature on an iron clad contract) set Max on an adventure with 25 single women looking for love. If you have watched (insert your favorite single man looking for the woman of his dreams reality show here), you will LOVE this book!

If you haven’t noticed already, I will warn that this book references the events in Consequences of Loving Colton A LOT so if you have not read that book, you will not get the vast majority of the jokes between Max and Reid and a few other references. Read that one first before diving into this one.

Now back to the review – As I said above, I had tears in my eyes from laughter by page 7. Being in Max’s head is just a mess as Rachel delivers all of his glorious personality in first person perspective. It may take you a bit to get a grasp on his way of thinking (or at least accept that he easily jumps from one thought to another) but once you do, hold on tight as his quick wit, sarcasm, and philosophical enlightenments will have you finishing the book before you even know what happened.

The one downside (which didn’t take away from the book) is that I personally have never watched any type of dating reality show so I am positive some of the references to those scenarios were lost on me but nonetheless, witnessing Max navigate 25 single women varying from timid to deranged was hilarious!

Side splitting laughter (Max and Reid give a whole knew perspective of sibling rivalry), sensual moments, and one heck of an ending makes me want to keep reading the series to see what happens next! ( )

For me this was a decent read. Nothing amazing about this story or the characters but it was an acceptable way to pass a couple of hours at the beach. ( )

Max was probably my favorite thing about book one so I was eager to read his book. After finishing it, I like him even more.

The beginning of this novel is slapstick comedy like the first was. Some is more over the top and even a bit cheesy. I found myself literally laughing out loud. After it really gets into the meat of the story, there are actually several surprisingly deep parts. Max is quite the man. He mostly just shows his easy going, silly, well-groomed side, but he is also very smart, romantic and athletic. I was truly shocked by how hard I fell for him. One minute he had me giggling and the next swooning.

The female lead is easy to like, and her personality fits Max's perfectly. They are a definite match. The rest of the little gang of friends also play their parts. It was nice catching up with everyone again. New characters and animals join the cast. They are great additions.

The overall plot was good, not mind-blowing, but I did enjoy it. I recommend it to those looking for something light and fun, a good-time read. On the other hand, Max, really stands out to me. He's the total package— gorgeous looks, wealth, intelligence, excellent sense of humor and the biggest heart ever. I love him. I want my own Max.
