Framed within the context of New Social Movements, the book is a thorough, detailed account of the nationally renowned resistance movement by the indigenous peoples of Tepoztla n, along with allied non-indigenous communities and organizations, against the imposition of a golf course, club, and upscale residences (1995-2001). Ultimately they defeated plans that threatened communal lands which, under the increasing pressures of the neoliberal state, were sought for development by multinational corporations and elite banking capital. These lands, beyond their historical function as a commons, were also part of the Chichinautzin Biological Corridor, a rich forest that served as a water source and fair filter, as well as being a basis for local Tepozteco identity. This renovation of identity formed around the mythic image of Tepoztecatl, younger brother of Quetzalcoatl in ancient Aztec (Mexica) lore, and served as an imaginary for pluri-ethnic identity, to re-instill and revitalize cultural memory, and to focus resistance to outside money, power, and politics.
