I've had this book on my shelf for a while-it's an early reviewer book that didn't actually come in the mail until many months after it was supposed to-and my school's reading competition has bonus points for reading a book about basketball, so I was inspired to pick this up finally and get some extra points for my classroom!Price tells the story of his year spent attempting to train his body and mind to be able to dunk a basketball. Along the way, he reveals personal stories about his and his family's life, as well as delving into the history of basketball, and jumping in general. As a huge basketball fan, I found this book most interesting when it focused on the basketball aspect of things, but in general, this was a good, quick read, with some real impactful emotional moments. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. I enjoyed reading Asher Price's "Year of the Dunk". The author deftly weaves in the science of the dunk with his own experience playing basketball. Although this book is about basketball in particular, I feel like anybody can apply the lessons it presents to their everyday lives. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This was a pretty quick read but I found it really interesting. I like the exploration of how much of our talents and skills are we born with and how much can be cultivated. I'm not going to lie, I've always wondered if i put in the effort if I would be able to dunk.... Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This Early Reviewer novel is what it shown on the cover and back cover summary itself: A guy's year-long quest to try and master the dunk, one of the most well-known and commonly highlighted moves in basketball. The book itself is decent. It does well to weave in the details of the past life of the author with his present life and training for the eventual attempt (...I'm not going to spoil it as to whether he, indeed, manages to finally dunk a basketball for this review...). There are also the occasional yarns about a scientist or athlete that he meets during his journey who have some association with sports and sports medicine. Some of them might be a bit too long, but others have a bit of relevancy when it comes to discussing about the science of sports and athleticism. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

By embarking on a quest to dunk a basketball at the age of 34, journalist Asher Price investigates the limits of human potential--starting with his own. We all like to think that (with a little practice) we could run faster, learn another language, or whip up a perfect soufflé. But few of us ever put those hopes to the test. In Year of the Dunk, Asher Price does, and he seizes on basketball's slam dunk--a feat richly freighted with distinctly American themes of culture, race, and upward mobility--as a gauge to determine his own hidden potential. The showmanship of the dunk mesmerized Asher as a child, but even with his height (six foot plus) and impressive wingspan, he never pushed himself to try it. Now, approaching middle age, Asher decides to spend a year remaking his body and testing his mind as he wonders, like most adults, what untapped talent he still possesses. In this humorous and often poignant journey into the pleasures and perils of exertion, Asher introduces us to a memorable cast of characters who help him understand the complexity of the human body and the individual drama at the heart of sports. Along the way he dives into the history and science of one of sports' most exuberant acts, examining everything from our genetic predisposition towards jumping to the cultural role of the slam dunk. The year-long effort forces him to ask some fundamental questions about human ability and the degree to which we can actually improve ourselves, even with great determination. The author went through many physical tests and limits, even after being diagnosed with cancer. Eventually, healed, his journey took him to a lab in England, and to meeting many athletes, scientists and physiotherapist in his exploration of his potential.
This was an exciting book to read and I had a hard time putting it down as I follow Price's journey. I will always think of the slam dunk in a new admiration now, realizing it isn't as easy as athletes make it look. The author gave me a new, thorough understanding of how a person remakes himself and responds when attempting to reach the limits of his potential.
I heartily recommend this book to any family with an interest in basketball and any athletic person as a gift for them to know what really constitutes determination to finish a project. ( )
