In the light of flickering campfires, fearsome monsters took shape in the imaginations of our earliest ancestors. They saw giants and dragons, werewolves and vampires, the dead rising from their graves.
    Even today we are sometimes possessed with the same fears of unknown horrors lurking in the dark. For when the moon is full and the wind moans in the trees, it seems that anything might be. Men might turn into beasts, beasts into monsters, and, anywhere, a Creature might awake.

The myth of the revived mummy has become so familiar from the movies that it is hard to visit a museum without imagining that the lid of a mummy case will creak slowly open and a bandage-wrapped arm emerge.

The Hameh. A vampire bird of Arabia. It grew from the blood of a murder victim and would not rest until it had drunk the blood of the murderer. Its call was "Give me drink!"

Most early science fiction was about wonderful inventions and marvelous journeys. But writers soon began to explore the idea that life might exist beyond the planet Earth. What forms would life take in outer space? The possibilities were unlimited. Thus, a new type of creature was born—the alien, a frightening being from another world.

At first glance Mr. Hyde is not the most terrifying of creatures. He has no claws or fangs, no scales or horns. But he has one very frightening feature—he is always with us.
