Deze bundel van drie Aira 'romans' (ze zijn kort, novelles) lijkt me voorlopig de beste introductie tot zijn werk.
Ghosts, wat ik eerder las in vertaling als [b:De schimmen|17904310|De schimmen|César Aira|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1433936841s/17904310.jpg|3432165] is een (relatief) traditioneel verhaal met magisch-realistische componenten, over het dochtertje van een concierge in een nieuwbouw in Buenos Aires, wat contact tracht te maken met een groep geesten die zich in het gebouw ophoudt.
Landscape painter vertelt het verhaal van de (overigens historische) landschapsschilder Johann Moritz Rugendas, die volgens de regels van de fysionomie tracht het ruwe, negentiende-eeuwse Argentijnse landschap te vatten, maar daarmee ook in contact komt met de natuurkrachten en de geschiedenis zelf.
En Literary Conference gaat over een auteur slash mad scientist die plots rijk wordt na het vinden van een piratenschat en daardoor zijn droom om de wereld te veroveren kan uitvoeren door duizenden klonen te fabriceren van de Mexicaanse schrijver Carlos Fuentes.
Zo.
Ik las ergens iemand Aira beschrijven als de Roomba van de literatuur; de stofzuigerrobot die een hele dag alle richtingen uit rolt zonder enig schijnbaar doel maar uiteindelijk de klus klaart.
Zo ook komen de romans van Aira na lange, vaak initieel onbegrijpelijke omzwervingen op dat doel uit. En zoals steeds is dat doel geen plotgedreven fantasie (de wereld is mooi, mensen zijn vreemd) maar een analyse (kritiek, samenvatting?) van de natuur der dingen en hoe die zich voorstelt — wat is fictie, wat is de geest, hoe werkt perceptie, bestaat er een waarheid?
Daarnaast blijft een thema bij Aira de mogelijkheid om deze natuur te ontsluiten, als mens en als individu in een cultuur: als arme, als kind, als vrouw, als gekolonizeerde en zo voort.
Voeg hierbij dat Aira niet 'mooi' schrijft (het is een boeltje) maar wél poëtisch (hij noemt zijn eigen werk zelf eerder poëzie dan narratief proza) en je hebt een bijzonder schrijver die ik zonder twijfel een ontdekking en een favoriet durf noemen. (
