"Killed in Action -- the most dreaded words imaginable for a soldier's wife. Jess Albert has been living with them for four years, since the death of her husband in Afghanistan. Finding blessed numbness in routine, she doesn't dare to look ahead, any more than she can bear to look back. Then Tyler Brown, a former special-ops warrior, shows up at her small general store in Minnesota North Woods, jarring her back to life. Jess knows better than to fall in love with another man who places duty to his country before love of his wife- but there's no denying the longing and the hope for a future that Ty makes her feel. A world away, a man ravaged by years of captivity and torture, a man with no memories, finally escapes- clinging to life and sanity in a hostile land. In his darkest hour, he awakes in a lantern-lit cave to find a woman at his side. Dark-haired and dark-eyes, her touch is caring, despite the resentment he hears in her voice and sees on her face. Rabia is bound by honor to save the lost American soldier in her keeping, this broken warrior from a war that has brought so much devastation to her land. But is it honor igniting her compassion for her enemy, or is it something more? While a Black Ops team plans a daring rescue mission to bring the solider home, two women on opposite sides of the world walk a dangerous path between betrayal and honor, and must find for themselves where to draw the lines between duty and love. New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cindy Gerard's latest novel is a heartwarming, richly emotional, action-packed story about homecomings- just in time for the holidays"-- "Four years ago Jess Albert got the news that her husband Jeff was killed in action in Afghanistan, and a painful void entered her life. The more time passed, the more acutely she felt that emptiness. But when Tyler Brown, former military hero and all-around alpha male, shows up a year after she'd last seen him, Jess gradually begins to realize there is one thing that can make her feel whole again--love. As they're planning their wedding and new life together, Jess receives shocking news: her husband is alive, under the care of a young Afghani woman hiding him from the Taliban. Even as he sees their happily-ever-after slip away, Ty arranges for the One Eyed Jacks and Black Ops, Inc. teams to make a daring and dangerous rescue mission to bring Jeff home. The hardest thing Ty or Jess has ever done is to let the other go. When Jeff returns to Jess, broken physically and emotionally and with no memory of their history, they try to heal their marriage and each other. But as time brings them together more as friends than lovers, an unexpected development helps them see the true way home, to the people they love"--… (plus d'informations)

I enjoyed this book but I didn't love it. There were two romances here and I didn't think the author did either of them justice. It seemed to me that the only person I really knew well was the husband being held prisoner in Afghanistan. I just don't think there was time to develop the four people involved enough to really get the reader involved. It wasn't as poignant as it could have been since you knew from the start what the outcome would be. The author made a choice that for me negates the angst and drama in a big way. She chose to reveal that the home town heroine and the husband who was captive in Afghanistan had been growing apart and were on the verge of a divorce before he shipped out. It would have been a much more powerful story if she had really still loved him not just felt obligated with a lingering fondness for her childhood sweetheart.

Another thing that bothered me is the whole angle involving Maya. The hero meets her then goes home and when an old love shows up he decides pursuing the new girl is too much work. Okay I can live with that sorta. But then she dies and he says what the heck let's go see if that other girl is the love of my life. That feels like a lame way to give them something in common and doesn't really give me much respect for the hero.

I give kudos to the author for having an Afghani heroine but I wanted a lot more time in her head and background to really get into it.

I thing it's worth reading especially for a fan but I would have preferred either a longer book or two closely allied books.

Still looking forward to CG's next book because I generally enjoy them very much. ( )

“The Way Home” is a story of a soldier’s survival and subsequent return to his wife and the situations that occur before and after his return. The book was written by Cindy Gerard.

Jess Albert is trying to live her new life without her husband J.R. who was listed as killed in action during the Afghanistan conflict. He has been dead for three years and Jess is can’t seem to go on with her life. She prefers to life quietly in a tourist town in northern Minnesota running the store her parents left when they moved to Florida.

Ty Brown came to the lakes district supposedly to fish, but actually to see Jess again. Jess had been involved with a special ops action a year before. Ty couldn’t get Jess off his mind and comes back to see her. Meanwhile, J.R. is not dead, but is being cared for by Rabia, an Afghan woman who would be killed if the Taliban found out she was hiding and caring for an American soldier.

Jess and Ty fall in love and are ready to begin a life together when J.R. is discovered to be alive, although he doesn’t remember anything about his life before he was injured. What follows is the story of Jess and J.R. as they try to learn about each other all over again, and about Ty and Rabia, who try to accept whatever happens.

Night Owl Reviews and Gallery Books provided a free print copy in return for my honest review of this book. I recommend this book as a timely look at the results of what happens in peoples’ lives as a result of war. We see how much they give and how much they lose.

I know when I pick up a book by cindy Gerard that it's going to be good.

That said, I think this is the best one to date: which is saying alot since I fell for the BOIs this time last year.

The book has a different feel than her previous romantic suspense books - but not in a bad way.
The emotions the author envoked left me feeling for the characters and the unusual situation they found themselves in. You can deduce the situation through the story summary.

Cindy Gerard has become a favorite author of mine and I look forward to what is to come.

An ARC was provided by the publisher through Netgalley. ( )

It has been over three years since Jess learned that her husband, Jeff, was KIA in Afghanistan. Though scare and a bit reluctant at first, Jess finally begins to get over the loss, meeting Ty Brown, also a Black Ops war veteran, and gradually becoming involved with him. However, just as she and Ty, who also has demons in his past that haunt him, become more closely involved, they get word that Jeff was not killed, but was held prisoner by the Taliban and escaped and may be on his way home to her. Jeff has as many or more demons in his past, from the captivity and torture he went through at the hands of the Taliban and from the personal relationship he developed with the Afghan woman, Rabia, whom he cannot forget and misses once home. The author has developed a fantastic plot and storyline for these two couples, gently drawing the read in, as more and more details about their lives, current and past, are developed and presented. I felt closely connected with all four main characters from the beginning. It can sometimes be difficult to develop an intricate plot with many turns and twists as this book has, but the author has done a superb job. I have never read any of her books before but will now go in search of some, after reading her masterful story. The way she described Afghanistan and the experiences of Jeff there as well as the small town life of his left-behind wife jess was definitely worth of note. Their story is a bit different from the normal romance that books cover today. If the reader wants a totally involving and mesmerizing story in which to involve himself or herself, this book is a must. In addition any reader who is looking for a heartwarming love story this is the book to read. I received this book from NetGalley to read and review. ( )
