The prehistory of Powys is difficult to categorize; like the countryside itself the material remains are subtle and elusive, and the picture is neither clear nor complete.

Powys is a region of the happy mean - not so rich as Clwyd to the N or so wild ar Gwynedd to the NW, so remote as Dyfed to the SW or so industrialized as the Glamorgans to the S or as Gwent to the SE.
