Two sisters. Two voices. One Heart.

The mystery of "Magic Man." The wicked riff of "Barracuda." The sadness and beauty of "Alone." The raw energy of "Crazy On You." These songs, and so many more, are part of the fabric of American music. Heart, fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson, has given fans everywhere classic, raw, and pure badass rock and roll for more than three decades. As the only sisters in rock who write their own music and play their own instruments, Ann and Nancy have always stood apart??certainly from their male counterparts but also from their female peers. By refusing to let themselves and their music be defined by their gender, and by never allowing their sexuality to overshadow their talent, the Wilson sisters have made their mark, and in the process paved the way for many of today's female artists.

In Kicking and Dreaming, Ann and Nancy, with the help of critically acclaimed and bestselling music biographer Charles R. Cross, recount a journey that has taken them from a gypsy-like life as the children of a globe-trotting Marine to the frozen back roads of Vancouver, where they got their start as a band, to the pinnacle of success??and sometimes excess. In these pages, readers will learn the truth about the relationship that inspired "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You," the turmoil of inter-band romances gone awry, the reality of life on the road as single women and then as mothers of small children, and the thrill of performing and in some cases partying with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Stevie Nicks, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and other rock legends. It has not always been an easy path. Ann struggled with and triumphed over a childhood stutter, body image, and alcoholism; Nancy suffered the pain and disappointment of fertility issues and a failed marriage but ultimately found love again and happiness as a mom. Through it all, the sisters drew from the strength of a family bond that trumps everything else, as told in this intimate, honest, and uniquely female take on the rock and roll life.

Throughout their career, Ann and Nancy have never found an answer to the question they are most frequently asked: "What is it like to be a woman in rock and roll?" Kicking and Dreaming puts that question to bed, once and for all… (plus d'informations)

NOW I understand what some of their songs mean and I appreciate the sharing of their stories. I had to laugh when I read that Nancy sang "These Dreams" with a cold - I always wondered why that particular recording included some rough spots.
The format of the book that allowed some differing perspectives kept the book from dragging and offered insight into how some friends perceived all the happenings.
I grew up listening to Heart and have always enjoyed their music. Until reading this book, I did not fully appreciate some of the barriers they conquered to be able to do what they did. ( )

I'm a sucker for a good rock bio and there's been some good ones and some horrible ones. This, thankfully, is one of the better ones. It was also a great feature of the audiobook that Ann and Nancy narrate the bulk of the book.

Heart has always been a favourite band, but one that I didn't know much of the story about. The early years (once you get past the inevitable "our parents met..." part) detailing the initial rise of the band, the crap they had to deal with in the early years, the lawsuits and all the ups and downs that follow were fascinating, and there's some absolute gems in here. I had no idea Ann's house became the crash pad for the movers and shakers of the early Nineties Seattle grunge movement.

This book proves that Heart is a great band, with Ann and Nancy straddling the line between rock Gods like John Paul Jones and Elton John and the newer gods like Chris Cornell and Jerry Cantrell, while also jamming or hanging with the likes of Carrie Underwood and Joni Mitchell. And yet, Paul McCartney didn't really know who the hell they were.

Fun and fascinating stuff. Could have been twice as long. I yanked one star just for the sometimes awkwardly horrible writing, which I blame on their co-author. ( )

Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock n Roll🍒🍒🍒🍒
By Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson
2012

Honest, intimate glimpse into the world of the Wilson sisters, and Heart, the band they were such an important part of. Ann and Nancy take turns sharing and revealing their experiences, their feelings and their rise to worldwide fame. Candid and insightful, their lively and hilarious stories, loves and insights are so genuine and fun to read. I've been a fan of their music and songs for years, and this is a fantastic memoir of two women, as well as performers. This is a must for any Heart fan!!
Highly Recommended. ( )

Worth a read for Heart fans. Some of the rock star sexism the Wilson sister experienced is not surprising (from the Southern rock bands). Both sisters write at length about the difficulties in being female rock stars, especially during the 80s and the advent of the MTV videos. The story behind some of the big songs from their catalouge are interesting and I was surprised that some that I liked were not loved by the sisters. I was really hoping for more on my favorites of their later records, Desire Walks on and Jupiter's Darling, but for a Heart fan or just those casually interested in post-60s rock its worth a check-out from the library, not necessarily a book to run out and buy. Review of “Kicking and Dreaming” by Ann and Nancy Wilson
with Charles R. Cross

I have been a Heart fan since I was in my early teens. I was drawn to them by Ann’s amazing voice and Nancy’s powerful guitar playing. A former friend of mine from middle/high school and I would pretend to be Ann and Nancy. We would sing and play air guitar all the while imitating their movements from their videos. We spent hours trying to prefect the vocals and even tried starting a band that didn’t really pan out all because we looked up to Ann and Nancy. This book is a very detailed look at the Wilson sister’s musical roots and beginning. Their candid demeanor makes this book feel genuine and not fake just to sell books. The book takes you through the way that Ann and Nancy were treated in what was considered as a “man’s world” career and how they “proved” themselves among the masses. In addition, the book discusses the entire Wilson family as a whole, along with personal struggles; such as weight, infertility, drugs and alcohol abuse. After reading this book I became even more of a Heart fan that ever before. Ann and Nancy are role models that hard work and dedication certainly can pay off. In essence the Wilson sisters rock! I would recommend this book to any Heart fan or fan of rock and roll music.
