The magical tarot deck is back in the Dark Fae realm messing with are favorite assassin Xanthe.
This story picks up right where 'Devil's Gate' ends, with Xanthe returning to the Dark Fae lands.

Xanthe is a palace guard and assassin for Queen Niniane. She's loved Riordan for years but she is a lowly guard and could only love him from afar.

Chancellor Aubrey wife betrayed Niniane trying to put him on the throne and was killed over a year ago. He's been shut down ever since, until Xanthe.

These two are thrown together after an assassination attempt on Aubrey. To keep him safe Xanthe is ordered to care for his wounds and guard him in her isolated cottage.

This is a nice little novella, but it has some problems. The title doesn't really fit the story, there's very little action and the hunting refers to their romance. Strong confident Xanthe becomes shy around Riordan. If I didn't know Xanthe from previous books I would have thought it sweet but it just didn't feel like the same character, I fell in love with from previous books. Aubrey is likable and I liked him for Xanthe but I never really felt their connection, There's also some weird word choices and a few editing problems.

I read Hunter’s Season when it was first published and loved it. I’ve been on an audiobook kick and decided to try out Ms. Harrison’s Elder Races series in Audio.

Even if you haven’t read an Elder Race book you could still pick this novella up, but I would recommend at least reading Books 1 & 2 first in the Elder Race series; since they give you a sense of what is going on in the world.

Hunter’s Season features Xanthe a Dark Fae Assassin and Aubrey a Dark Fae Chancellor. These characters are secondary characters introduced in the Elder Race series. We meet Xanthe in [b:Devil's Gate|35588120|Devil's Gate A Novella of the Elder Races|Thea Harrison|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1499112421s/35588120.jpg|19201165] and Aubrey in [b:Storm's Heart|9665450|Storm's Heart (Elder Races, #2)|Thea Harrison|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1297195839s/9665450.jpg|14553167]. These two come together to create a lovely and passionate romance.

This novella was sensational with a heavenly HEA. Ms. Harrison delivers a beautiful blossoming romance; between two very different characters. Their romance builds slowly, is sweet, and adorable. I love how the author put so much attention on their romance.

I adored Hunter’s Season. The conclusion was satisfying, the romance is charming, and we get a little danger and intrigue too. Harrison shows us just how much love can truly heal.

Audio Review Dec. 2017: I enjoyed the audio narration for Hunter's Season. Sophie Eastlake did a superb job with the voices and bring out the blossoming romance between Xanthe and Aubrey.

The Elder Race series brings us a verity of unique supernaturals, worlds, and so much more. It’s an entertaining series to read or listen too. I highly recommend diving in.

Definitely the best out of the Elder Races novellas. While I thoroughly enjoyed all the other novellas in the series, my biggest complaint always centered around how the main plot was handled. A large part of this is because Harrison had some wonderful ideas going on that could've been expanded (and probably should have) into a full length novel. Luckily, that wasn't the case here.

Xanthe, the assassin from [b:Devil's Gate|13606133|Devil's Gate (Elder Races, #4.6)|Thea Harrison|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1334958620s/13606133.jpg|19201165], gets assigned/volunteers to guard Aubrey after an attack leaves him near death. While guarding Aubrey, Xanthe finds her long-term crush on him deepening but doubts that he'd find someone of her station attractive. Aubrey had been betrayed by his ex-wife in [b:Storm's Heart|9665450|Storm's Heart (Elder Races, #2)|Thea Harrison|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1297195839s/9665450.jpg|14553167], which has left him extremely jaded but he soon finds himself trusting and admiring Xanthe.

The plot of this one worked really well, mostly because it was entirely character driven. Things didn't feel rushed and I loved the slow paced building of the relationship between Aubrey and Xanthe. It felt like we really got to know the characters this time.

I would recommend reading this one to fans of Thea Harrison, but only if you had read the previous novella since it sets up Xanthe's character. I also really hope that Harrison plans to revisit the characters in some of these novella's since I feel like a lot of their stories need to be continued, plus I would just enjoy spending more time with Xanthe and Aubrey. ( )

A very nice novella about two adult people coming together.

Xantha has been in love with the dark fey chancellor Aubrey for some time. As she has to protect him and care for him after an attempted assassination, he slowly falls in love with her, too. It was a beautiful littel tale. For me missing was a bit of humor or some suspense.
