Trinity: Military War Dog is the first book in Ronie Kendig’s new series, A Breed Apart. Featured are former U.S. military working dogs that have been declared excess. Unfortunately, Trinity’s handler has had his own excess designation following a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan. Trinity was unable to work with any other handler, so Heath Daniels now has her full time. They come to a ranch in Texas to find healing and maybe a new purpose in their lives with the A Breed Apart program. On a PR tour back in Afghanistan, Heath meets Jia aka Darci an intriguing geologist, or is she? Trinity was on the shortlist of books nominated for the mystery/thriller category of the Inspy Awards. I had the great privilege to read and judge this book. A romantic suspense novel, Trinity combines military maneuvers, international intrigue, espionage and a love story or two. Yes, Heath and Jia fall in love despite great odds, but it is also the love story between Heath and the dog that has become much more of a partner through tough field experiences and the threat of death. It is this bond between handler and dog that makes this book special. If you like romantic suspense with lots of action and danger you will like Trinity: Military War Dog. But if you love animals and are a believer in the bonds between them and humans, you will love this one. Recommended. (I received this novel from the publisher for judging purposes. The opinions expressed are mine alone.) Staff Sergeant Heath “Ghost” Daniels ‘ closest partner is Trinity, his Special Forces-trained military war dog, until Trinity attempts to prevent his actions. Misunderstanding Trinity’s actions, Daniels and Trinity go stateside after injuries in a bomb explosion. When Daniels gets the chance to return to the battlefields, even though it is only as a moral booster, he and Trinity go. Then circumstances, force them back into action. Great story, I enjoyed every minute. I admit I am a dog lover and I admire all of our military professionals, but the story captured my imagination and I found myself praying for the safety of the characters, a sure sign of my enjoyment. The characters and the story completely pulled me in. I could not put it down, part love story, part military story, and all dog. Highly enjoyable, I can not wait for the next one in the series. I recommend it for those who look for more in a story line than romance. Received Galley from NetGalley.com 4 Stars The first part of book is slow trying to figure out who is who and where they fit. Then it gets to the meat of the story and is all action till the end. Thier are Spies, lots of Generals, dog handler,American,Chinese,Russians, Afgans and British. Ghost (Heath) is attacked by his dog and it saved his life. But he did come out of the service with a brain injury and a scar where his dog Trinity bit him and dragged him out of the way. Heath wanted to go back to Afgan with his unit, but with headaches all the time and blackouts he would be dangerous to others. Jibril Khouri wants to train retired milatary and police dogs and thier handlers to be able to be hired out for contract duty. Heath goes back to training with Trinity and gets back in better shape but not all thier yet when he is asked to go back to Afgan on tour. To show even if your wounded thier is life after. Darci is a spy she is also Chinese. She defected with her father when she was little after her mom was killed because she was a christian. Her brother stayed in China. She is in Afgan working as a geolgist survey as cover. Darci had one mission where she failed and got bad intell and passed it on. That was the mission where Heath got hurt and Jibril lost his leg. Trinity saved both of thier lives. The Chinese are up to something with the Russians. A couple of different ones say that he is here to stop the others plans and you are not sure who is the good one if thier is. Its a clean read. I look forward to reading more of this new series by Ronie. I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest review from Netgalley. 9/1/2012 PUB Barbour Publishing,Inc. Heath Daniel received an injury that ended his military career. His military war dog, Trinity, was also removed from service as she would only respond to Heath. Even though he would like to be back in the action with his team, he finds himself (along with Trinity) speaking and training other handlers and their war dogs. Darci Kintz (Jia) is on a secret mission when she is captured. Heath then reunites with his old team, as well as Trinity, to try to extract Darci from enemy hands. Will they make it in time?... and who is the real enemy? Wow! This authors tag line is 'Rapid-Fire Fiction' and she isn't kidding! She keeps you busy from beginning to end, dodging bullets, ducking punches and hanging on for dear life! Through it all though, she adds comedic relief at just the right moment for the reader to catch their breath. I have to admit that some parts were difficult to read. War is hell and this author made it feel real. I loved getting to know the players. Heath and Darci were great characters who dealt with real issues including, where is God when all the bad stuff happens? I'm sure we've all ask that question. Trinity, the featured war dog, was fascinating. I wanted to crawl in the book and give her a hug. But she is a working war dog and to see her in action was something to behold. Trinity is a fantastic start to Ronie Kendig's latest series, A Breed Apart, and one I would highly recommend. Looking forward with great anticipation to the next installment! As it says on the back cover, "An ex-green beret and his war dog on the greatest mission of their lives and probably their last", this is truly what this story is all about. Military intelligence officer Darci Kintz has been captures with her geological survey team in Afghanistan. She was secretly tracking the Taliban, but has now been taken captive by a ruthless leader. Although a year ago Heath Daniel's career was destroyed because of a medical discharge when a bomb caused traumatic brain injury, he is now called upon to use his skill, along with Trinity his military war dog, to find and bring back Darci. The bond between Trinity and Heath was precious and the way they look out for each other was very heartwarming and special. The loyalty and love between dog and handler meant that no one was going to hurt or come between that bond. There was also a very special attraction between Heath and Darci and I loved their dialogue and how they interacted in this story. I was fully engaged in this story and couldn't read fast enough to see how it would all end. Now on to the second book in this series, "Talon". ( )
