The secret chicken society was a very lovely book about a little boy who desperately wanted a chicken. It started with a class project. The teacher got an incubator, thermometer and 12 eggs to watch and see if they would hatch. Mrs.Lopez said any child with $2 and a note from their parents could take a chicken home if they hatched. Daniel was so eager to have his own chicken. He loved animals. He had convinced his mom and dad to let him have one of the chickens. After waiting 21 days, only 5 of the eggs hatched into chicks. 15 children had signed up to take a chick, but everyone had backed out except Daniel. He got to take home all 5 chicks. The one stipulation was that he could not have a rooster. Daniel brought the chicks home to his family. They each named their hens and Daniel fed and watered them every day. Daniels dad eventually built them a chicken coop after the chickens got out and ruined a neighbors flowerbed. One morning Daniel woke up to crowing. He couldn't believe it. His hen was in fact a rooster. He and his siblings formed a secret society to keep the rooster a secret. This eventually failed and he had to give up his rooster. His favorite neighbor Mrs. Grafalo was in a retirement home and she adored the chicken. Daniel made arrangements and his rooster go to go and live with her in the country.

This is a book is about a young boy Daniel whose class hatches chicks from eggs. Daniel decides to adopt them all, although what they didn't realise was that Peepers was a rooster. Roosters are illegal to keep as pets so Daniel and his siblings decide to make a society called the Secret Chicken Society to see if they could come up with a plan to keep Peepers. They come up with all sorts of ideas such as Plan A- keep the peace and Peepers, Plan B- keep peepers quiet, Plan C- stop Peepers from crowing, Plan D- put peepers in the dark. They have many adventures with the chickens and a crazy summer

Daniel and his classmates are going to hatch chickens with Mrs. Lopez, their teacher. When the chicks hatch Daniel takes all five of them home because he's the only student who's able to. This is the story about how Daniel and his family come to realize that Peepers is a rooster, not a hen, and having a rooster in the neighborhood is not ok. The Secret Chicken Society takes form in an effort to protect Peepers from a mean neighbor that wants him gone.

I like this book because it presents school, science in particular, as fun and meaningful. Judy Cox, the author, takes the opportunity to use share some factual instructions about hatching chickens and taking car of them. There's also an authentic component in the plot about how being responsible for animals is really important. Daniel and his sisters and brother learn to respect their pets and raise them responsibly. Just 12 short chapters, this book is a great introduction into the chapter book. Vocabulary is manageable but diverse, with an interesting, not overly formulaic plot. The children each hold different roles in the family and carry on varying relationships with each other and the chickens. This is a great read aloud book for early readers between adult and child. Funny and cute, with a bit of emotion as well.

Such a cute book. It follows a young boy who's class is going to get baby chickens, and the childrens adventure with them in the classroom. This would be a great story before a teacher brings chickens into her classroom, or watches them hatch. It was very cute and funny, all the adventures these chickens got into. ( )
