At the beginning of the 20th century, archaeologists found the tombs of the pharaoh's nobility in its neighbourhood - full of extraordinary works of art from the time of the old Kingdom - more than 4,000 years old. Wilhelm Pelizaeus, a merchant from Hildesheim, sponsored the excavations. Due to his financial sponsorship, the Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim today boasts one of the most important collections from the time of the great pyramids in the whole world.
