This was pretty good. Not quite a four star, but Winnie bumped it up to a four star. She was the best.

In Dev's story, he's haunted by many hurts from his past including his time in the war and the abandonment by his mother. It all helps him bond with Emmie who has her own secrets. They fall in love quickly, but can't find a way to be together. In the end, they get their happily ever after.

This wasn't terribly exciting, but it was a good read for me and I enjoyed it. Can't wait for Val's book. (

Emmie es hija bastarda de un noble, y se ha jurado a sí misma que jamás cometerá el mismo error que su madre. Por eso, cuando Devlin le propone formar juntos un hogar para Winnie, ella se muestra muy reticente. Y a pesar de que las decisiones que tomó en el pasado la obligarán a apartarse de su lado, Emmie se siente cada día más atraída por los besos del coronel. ¿Será capaz de resistirse a su encanto?

I just couldn't get into this story and I loved the first one.

Well-written, great characters, good plot. Just didn't punch my buttons. Ex-soldier, still suffering from battle trauma, takes over neglected estate, finds illegitimate daughter of previous owner and the mysterious cousin who looks after her.

Male lead: Devlin St. Just, oldest but illegitimate son of the Duke, honorable, traumatized, and searching for answers.

Female lead: Emmaline Farnum, between worlds, independent woman, baker extraordinaire, neither gentry nor servant.

Complications: Winnie Farnum, illegitimate daughter, around age 6, ill-behaved and rude, Vicar Bothwell, who has a romantic interest in Emmaline, assorted members of Devlin's family

Quirkiness: Illegitimate children are the theme of this romance, how they live and how they marry. Emmaline runs a bakery to support herself.

I think this author has improved with time, so her earlier books aren’t as engaging for me. The couple in this one were kind of slow to grasp things, which grows tiresome. But the premise was decent and the hero was nice. (
