My biggest issue was the inclusion of the clairvoyant. I don't mind reading about psychics. And I like crime. But I'm not a huge fan of mixing the two. While Claire seemed like an alright character, her insights into Krissy's mind annoyed me. I had to work hard to ignore it. I could've accepted it had she been more like Shawn from Psych. Her own view that it's just precognition was acceptable. But seeing visions of how Krissy was feeling was just a step too far for me. But that was my biggest issue. The rest of the book was enjoyable. I liked the cast of characters. The mystery was interesting, if a little predictable. The romance between Hutch and Casey was alright, although the sex scene was a bit out of left field. It was rather graphic for what was otherwise mostly a crime novel. Although this was long, the pages flew by. I'll definitely be picking up more of the series. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. When Family Court Judge Hope Willis' six year old daughter Krissy is kidnapped, it's not only a traumatic event but it also brings back memories of her twin sister Felicity's kidnapping when they were children. That kidnapping was never solved and Felicity simply disappeared without a trace. Hope wants her daughter back so while the local police and FBI are investigating, Hope contacts Casey Woods, owner of Forensic Instincts for additional help. Casey's company has a reputation for solving crimes, often outside the lines of the law. Her company is well known to the local police, state police, and the FBI; all three are willing to take advantage of any information that Forensic Instincts can develop. The concept of Forensics Instincts is fascinating, and their unconventional methods to solving crimes makes this far more interesting than the standard FBI type book. I found myself engaged in the mystery even though it seemed somewhat predictable and easy to guess who the villains were. I really liked the Forensic Instincts characters and look forward to reading another in the series. Overall it was a good book, with a fast moving plot and a variety of interesting characters.
Led by profiler Casey Woods, the Forensic Instincts team barrels into a snarl of suspects, secrets, and conspiracies. Smooth prose and engaging characters help offset some fairly obvious plot twists, a few of which stretch credibility to the breaking point. Also somewhat unbelievable are the near-infallible skills of Forensic Instincts' members and the willingness of dozens of police officers and FBI agents to let the team skirt legal boundaries repeatedly with no more than a harsh word or two of censure. When they are hired by veteran family court judge Hope Willis to find her missing daughter, Forensic Investigators--a team of renegade investigators comprised of a behavorist, a techno-wizard, an intuitive, and a former Navy SEAL--must race against time to bring Krissy back alive.
