This was the first book I read in a long time without knowing anything about the plot which was really refreshing! I was really intrigued by the magic system and the detailed way it was described in. And lots of action (detailed and well thought through) action is also something I really enjoy in fantasy books. The characters on the other hand I did not like that much or let's say I didn't really like the overall pacing and the ways we got to know the characters - it was all a bit too rushed for me and I couldn't really understand the motivations of the characters. The book was still very entertaining and a fast read with an interesting concept and magic system!… (plus d'informations)

Perry is a young man who finds out quite unexpectedly that he is a Mewranter, a shape shifter who finds out he can turn into a bird. And not just any bird - an eagle. Mewranters protect the world from the monsters that humans believe only exist in books and movies. But why are other mewranters trying to kill him? What is the giant sea monster that has appeared off the east coast? And what - if anything - does Perry have to do with it? Follow Perry as he learns more about who he is and what his purpose is on earth. With the help of his family, and friends Sarah and James, find out if the balance between good and evil can be restored.
I read the entire book in one sitting. It is by far the best young adult fiction I have read in a very long time. Kachi Ugo doesn't talk down to his readers like so many of the authors I have read, and he doesn't just throw in random things to legends we already know (I'm looking at you, sparkly vampires). I have read voraciously since I learned how at age 7, and this is the first book I can remember that deals with shape shifters in this manner. I like how the author actually believes teens know the meaning of words, or that they at least know how to look up definitions. I had to look up the meaning of the word "gleeds" myself. He writes as though teens have read further than basic chapter books. Kudos! I like this book so much that I have recommended it to my local library for purchase, and I will be purchasing it as a gift for my niece's 15th birthday this month. I will be looking to read more of his books. Excellent book suitable for anyone aged 12 and up.

From the description of this book, I really thought that I would love it. Unfortunately, I found the writing style to be very stilted and lacking detail. There wasn't enough world building and the dialogue between the characters didn't seem realistic. It felt more like an outline than an actual book which was very disappointing because it has such potential to be a great story.

I received this book in a free give away. A classic storyline of uninvited power coming to a youth in the vein of Luke Skywalker. This is a nice teen series opener to a fantasy world. I cannot say too much how it compares to other teen lit as I am long past that age, but I like international authors. Ugo's writing is vivid and easy to follow. Aside from the storyline, American youth can also appreciate a glimpse into other cultures (Yoruba, in this case).

The glossary is probably nice for the intended audience age, but it needs alphabetizing!.… (plus d'informations)
