What is mankind to do when an alien DNA has plagued humanity and there is no known cure? Go to outer space to find the answers. That is the premise of this novel.

I purchased this book as a new release at the 2018 Ad Astra Conference in Toronto. This is a difficult mix. If you want exorbitant details regarding medical procedures (including some not yet invented) then this novel has them. There is also a fair bit of techno-babble regarding the style of FTL in the novel. As a result, it meets the criteria for hard scifi with a mix of space opera. Not exactly a natural pairing, but one nevertheless.

What's also in the mix is a story sounding very much like the pulp era scifi of the 1930's where the characters and dialogue better suit mid-grade readers rather than adults. If written to appeal to mid-grade (which I think may have been the goal due to the artwork throughout) then the heavy hard scifi detail would be difficult for a person 10-14 to comprehend. If written for adults, then the characters and dialogue need an upgrade.

This is the first book in what is obviously a series or ology as it ends without resolution. However many books are to follow is of little consequence to me as I will not continue. My rating 2.5 stars… (plus d'informations)
